  About Podstrana:
Podstrana is a small tourist resort of a Mediterranean atmosphere that is located near Split, the center of Central Dalmatia. Podstrana and its settlements (Strožanac, Grljevac, Sv. Martin and Mutogras) stretch along the coastline 6 km long, which abounds with sandy beaches. The area is famous for the production of large quantities of high - quality vegetables, especially lettuce and also peaches and cherries of special quality.
According to the oldest historical sources, the area of today Podstrana was the territory of the Illyrian tribe Pituntin. Of course, here the Romans had left their mark, too and from the medieval times dated two churches of Sv. Jurja (St. George), while the parish church of Sv. Antonija (St. Anthony) dated from the Baroque era. Historical sources also claim that near the Church of Sv. Martina (St. Martin) the pact was made between the Venetian doge Peter Tradenija and Prince Mislav.
The vicinity of Split guarantees the customer the ability to choose among the many amenities that the city offers: to pay visits to the museums, exhibitions and the Split Summer Festival shows, while Podstrana offers the possibility to withdraw to the beach and enjoy the outdoors. The nearest airport is located near Split, only 30 km away, while the ferry port is only ten minutes away by car. For instance, Makarska is 25 km away and Trogir about 35 km.

The Podstrana’s coastal part extends 6 km along the sea comprising a series of the indented coastline pebbly coves and beaches.

The municipality comprehends five districts: the oldest Gornja Podstrana under the Perun peak, at an altitude between 290 and 340 m. The highest and most prominent position has been the Perun with the highest peak called the Križ (The Cross), at an attitude of a 533 m. Along the coastline from northwest to southeast are located the settlements Strožanac, Grljevac, Sv. Martin and Mutogras. Adriatic road connects them in a continuous elongated urban belt, which rises from the sea coast upwards along the gentle slopes of the Perun Mountain.
The area of the Podstrana zone belongs to the pleasant Mediterranean climate which is favorable to agriculture and therefore, cultivation of all the Mediterranean cultures such as, olives, grapes, figs, carob, citrus, peach, and gardening species that succeeds well because of its mild climate throughout the year. Beauty and cozy climate and indigenous ecological conservation of the natural environment are the original values ​​which the Podstrana residences have enjoyed. From the ancient times, the Podstrana has been attractive for settling and, on the gentle slopes of the Perun Mountain had sprung antique rustic villas and later Renaissance palaces and country houses. Because of the harmonious natural diversity in ecologically preserved environment, Podstrana proves to be the most desirable place to live. Nowadays it is rapidly enlarging and has become wealthy with new residents and also a suitable elite Split’s suburban area. This is an area made of stone, sea and sunshine, on the sunny side of the old Poljička Republic that, through the history has changed over its look and settlement structure and also the structure of its inhabitants, who had left their prints throughout the history as an interesting evidence of their life.
The first known inhabitants of the Podstrana were the Illyrians members of the Dalmata tribes. At the end of the 1st century BC, on this picturesque area the Romans had founded the oldest settlement called the Pituntium. After the Croats arrived, they settled on the slopes of the tamed hill all the way down to the sea. The oldest settlement called Gornja Vas is facing the sea and the sun, was erected beside the Mura water source.
In the year of 839, near the church of Sv. Martin in Podstrana was signed the first Croatian peace treaty historical mare nostrum, between Croatian Prince Mislav and the Venetian doge Petra Tradonika, after the young Croatian state military defeated Venice.
The cradle of today Podstrana is the Stara Podstrana (The Old Podstrana), a longitudinal series of ancient stone houses at the foot of steep cliffs Vršine, in whose courtyards and streets one can feel permanently pulsating spirit of the long past. The life in Podstrana poured in coastal areas, where today is a strung of urbanized settlements such as Strožanac, Grljevac, Sv.Martin and Mutogras.
